(News) Many Teachers Fail to Cross CTET Test Line

Many Teachers Fail to Cross CTET Test Line

The teacher training institutes in Tamil Nadu produce only a miniscule number of teachers who are eligible to impart education to Class 1-8 students in CBSE schools across the country, reveal results of the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) that was conducted last September.

A close look at the results show that out of the 722 degree and 1,018 diploma teacher training institutes in the State, only a little more than 40 each have at least one student who cleared at least one CTET paper.

This is an exam which teachers have to pass to be eligible for teacher jobs in CBSE schools.

Brought in 2010 after the introduction of Right to Education (RTE) Act, CTET envisaged bringing “national standards and benchmark of teacher quality in the recruitment process, induce teacher education institutions and students from these institutions to further improve their performance standards and send a positive signal to all stakeholders that the Government lays special emphasis on teacher quality,” the CBSE website stated.

Shockingly, a number of prospective teachers don’t register for the CTET at all. A cursory glance at the data put out by CBSE shows a number on institutes which showed zero in the ‘registered’ column. Students of institutes which did manage to send a sizeable number to the entrance test performed very poorly. For example, only three of the 163 students of an institute in Chennai who appeared for the Degree Paper-2 passed. Though shocking, the state of affairs does not surprise educationists in the State.
